In the meantime my son said that he'd like to play a tabletop game with me and after looking through some of what's available what really caught his eye was Warlord Games "Bolt Action". I've wanted to get into Bolt Action for a while and spurred on by my sons interest we bought ourselves the rulebook and looked into what forces we wanted to put together.
My son is only 11 years old and hasn't been bitten by the history bug that I have so he just told me he wanted to play as the Americans, didn't care which Americans, just that they had to be American. I'd recently saw others painting the US Rangers boxset so floated the idea through him and he said that's the force he wanted.
We decided (I decided) to build the lists as historically accurate as possible (at least accurate to what was on paper) so for his ranger force he would have four squads (two historical squads split into four in-game squads) featuring two squads of six Garand armed Rangers and two squads of Rangers armed with Garands and one armed with a BAR. We also added a Sniper Squad and two 60mm Mortar squads. This comes out to roughly 500 points.
With my sons Ranger force set it was time for me to decide what list I wanted and looking at what was available my first idea was a Fallschirmjäger squad but I didn't want to paint so much camo so settled on a small German Grenadier force instead. The German force would feature two nine man squads with an MG42 in each, a Sniper Squad and then I decided on a second platoon that would be a Heavy Weapons platoon and would have two Medium Machine Gun Squads in it, this came out to roughly 500 points.
With the lists made up I bought a box of US Rangers and a box of German Grenadiers and after cracking open the Ranger box I ran into the first problem of trying to do things historically accurate, the box isn't made to be historically accurate...
